If Blender 2.70 seems to crash upon installing Avastar, just restart Blender.
Quick install guide (for upgrade see below):

1.) Download blender
2.) Download the newest Avastar
DO NOT UNPACK THE ZIP FILE THAT IS INSIDE THE .RAR ANY FURTHER!!!
Mac users: try right mouse click -> save as
3.) open blender, navigate to File -> User Preferences
4.) Navigate to Add-Ons -> Install Add-Ons...
5.) Install the avastar .zip file that came out of the .RAR
6.) Search for "Avastar" in the list of modules and Activate it
Ignore the warning icon. It is just a reminder
that Avastar is still in Beta!
7.) Save as Default
