Questions about rigged meshes, plz help
Posted by: Makumba666 - 01-07-2017, 06:50 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (2)

Hi,
I am new to SL, but otherwise I am a seasoned 3d developer - a geme programmer, namely. I know almost everything about 3d meshes, rigging etc, but sincerely totally confused about SL meshes. So would you be so kind to answer several questions.

1. If I understand correctly rigged mesh means rigged to bones, with weight; and clothing must be rigged too, correct? In such case how UNRIGGED models could be imported and applied to rigged bodies? Namely I've found many topics here on goonsquad containing some clothing pieces (dress, top, bottom) for rigged meshes (May... don't remember the name, Elliza etc.) and those models DO NOT CONTAIN ANY WEIGHTS(!!!). So how they may be used on rigged body meshes? I would consider those topic as errors, but too many similar cloth pieces here. What's the catch?

2. About multi-material objects - some models contain several models that should be applied to a single mesh. If i am correct, to apply such textures to the model one have to use Select Faces and then select different parts of the model. That is what I am trying to do, but if I click ANYWHERE it selects the whole model, instead of a part of the model. Any advice?

 Thanks.

Linden Lab CEO: Sansar to Steer Clear of "Complete Geekdom"

nclick="window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false" target="_self">Ebbe Altberg Second Life Sansar UGC

Speaking of Second Life's many retrofits built on top of workarounds, here's another good interview with Linden Lab CEO Ebbe Altberg on Sansar, explaining how it's not like Second Life:

“We learned some positives but also a lot of ‘that’s not how you do it’ from Second Life,” said Altberg. “So we’re having a much more user-centric approach from the beginning, and try to make sure we stay away from the territory of complete geekdom.”

This should actually be Sansar's unofficial slogan: "Avoids Second Life's Complete Geekdom." Just like Linden Lab's unofficial is:

How to Customize SL Avatar Nails -- And Why We Need To

SL nail tutorial

Nalates has an in-depth tutorial for creating customized hand and toenails for Second Life avatars -- so in-depth, she gets into the 13 year+ history of SL avatars, a timeline of retrofits and workarounds, as the user community created solutions (and additional complexity) to Linden Lab's avatar forms. For instance:

The basic idea of changing your avatar to fit clothes didn’t go over well and limited sales of Standard Size products. To get past the limited appeal designers created what they called liquid mesh by figuring out how to weight mesh items to hidden parts of the avatar skeleton that somewhat worked with avatar shape settings. The popularity of liquid mesh led the Lab to develop Fitted Mesh, a more complete liquid mesh. The Lab added some bones and made other existing bones accessible for weighting and animation and did some slider work. The modifications were completed in early 2014. This lead to what we have now (2017): Fitted Mesh, that works with most of the shape sliders.

And so on. I'm continually fascinating by how Second Life the company both collaborates and conflicts with Second Life the community.
